The other night, while showering, I felt a small bump on the bottom of my belly, past the point where I can see. I looked at it in a mirror when I got out and it looked like a small tic... Frantic, I yelled for Mike to come take a closer look... He had me lay back on the bed so he could see the spot in better light... While he was looking really close, The Bean kicked... HARD... startling Mike and making him jump about 10 feet in the air and let some interesting vocab escape his mouth.... And that was what set off my laughing jag for the evening... ;-)
(It wasn't a tic, thank God!)
*****
Over the weekend, Kayden happened upon Mike and me while he was giving me a hug:
Kayden: I want in!
(Kayden proceeds to try to wedge herself between us while Mike does his best to keep her out and I try not to laugh at her plight...)
Finally, Mike lets go and steps back, and she gives me a hug... she then turns her back to me and opens her arms for Mike to hug her between us.
Mike: It's a sandwich!
Kayden: Yeah, and I'm the ham!
And yet another giggle fest for Mama... ;-)
*****
I'm large... very large... I am past the weight I was when I went to the hospital to deliver Kayden... and I have 10 weeks to go.... I actually split one of my 2 pairs of maternity dress pants today.... Had to break out the sewing machine to fix them....
This pregnancy has been much tougher on me than Kayden was... I can tell I'm older but I'm trying my hardest to enjoy it...
30 weeks as of yesterday....

Evolution of a Shiner
(So I got a text Sunday morning from Kayden's dad.... She was with him for the weekend:
"We had a little accident last night... Ball took a bad bounce & caught Kayden in the face..."
I texted back asking if she was in pain & he said no... Not surprised... She hardly cried when she fractured her foot at just over 2 years of age....
Monday morning, my mom sends me this picture:
(Aprox 36-40 hours post injury; more swelling/more discolored... I still haven't seen her in person yet...)
I again asked if she was in pain... Nope...
I meet my mom with Kayden Monday evening at Tae Kwon Do... It's the first time I've seen her since the injury...
Now I know I'm hormonal, but I seriously had to fight back tears... Still no pain complaints.... Her first real look at herself was at TKD in their wall mirror... "I look like a monster..." Said with a smirk....
I showed one of the docs at my office & he said he wanted to see her in a few days after the swelling went down so we have an appointment this Friday afternoon....
Her dad feels horrible... We both know it was an accident but that doesn't make it any easier to look at....
Today is Tuesday:
And we have her kindergarten readiness testing on Wednesday.... Hope the teacher isn't too horrified...

In other news, I'm 21 weeks... I feel pretty good but I can already tell this is going to be a long, hot summer.... Which is better than the sub-zero arctic weather we had this last winter... ;)

The Bean on the Screen
As far as Kayden knows, babies come from mommy's bellies. God puts them there to grow. She also knows she came out of my belly through a cut. (She's seen the scar.)
I should have known that I wouldn't be able to keep things that simple & innocent. She is too smart & asks too many questions. I wasn't prepared for the conversation that took place in the car yesterday afternoon. I totally had to wing it....
Mommy: I have an appointment tomorrow with a doctor... We are going to see a picture of The Bean on a TV screen... Do you want to come with us to see The Bean on the screen?
Kayden: I want to come!!! (Thinks for a moment...) Is it at YOUR doctors' office?
M: No, it's another kind if doctor... This doctor is Mommy's doctor while The Bean is in my tummy...
K: Oh... (Concerned) I don't want you to get another cut....
M: Mommy doesn't want another cut either... That's why I'm going to this doctor, so I don't have to have another cut...
K: Then how will The Bean get out?
M: (Draws complete blank... Is quiet for way too long trying to think how to explain this in a way she understands without freaking her out...)
K: Mommy! How is The Bean going to get out of your belly?!?!
M: Um, well, it comes out of my miss-miss (what she calls her girl parts... Not sure where she learned the term but I just went with it...)
K: (Laughs like I just told her the funniest joke ever!) Your miss-miss?!?! (Laughs even harder making Mommy laugh, too...)
M: (Think! Think! How do I steer this in a different direction?!?) How do YOU think The Bean should come out?
K: Through your mouth! (Still laughing...)
M: You think my mouth is big enough? (Laughing harder...)
K: Bigger than your miss-miss... (Good point, kid...) (Still laughing...)
M: (Lord, PLEASE make this stop)
K: How about your neck? Or your ear? (Still laughing...) Or your bottom!!!!
M: Well, it is kinda like pooping... (Giggle...)
K: POOPING!!!! (Laughing so hard I'm concerned she might potty herself...)
(At this point we are both laughing so hard neither of us can speak... I'm struggling to drive & am about to pull over.....)
Finally we get a hold of ourselves...
K: Yes, I want to see The Bean on the screen.... (Goes back to the book on her iPod...)
M: (Whew!!! Glad that's over...)
**********
Today we had the sonogram and everything looks perfectly normal...
We did have to wait 3 hours, though... Doc was called to a delivery... But I was patient, knowing that he delivers all his own patients... Which means he'll be there for me when my time comes....
Kayden did great! She was restless but really well behaved considering there were 3 other little girls in the waiting room who she REALLY wanted to play with... I wouldn't let her, which proved a smart decision when one of the nurses reprimanded them for being too loud & disruptive (which they really were)....
We finally got to see Doc & I seriously like him more & more each time I see him... I really had to prep myself to choose him at all.... I'm not a fan of the only hospital he delivers in & I don't do male OB/GYNs.... But I knew he was my best bet for a VBAC & I REALLY do NOT want another C/S....

18 Months Missing
My mother pointed out that there really wasn't an introduction of my husband... so for those readers who don't actually know me personally (not sure why you're here, but welcome!), here is a synopsis of the last 18 months:
I completed my first half marathon in October 2012... my goal was 3 hours... I did it in 3:15... I'm not disappointed with that...
I got engaged to Mike in December 2012... On my Nani's birthday, December 19th, to be exact... he was sweet and nervous and romantic...
We got married on January 26th, 2013... it was a small wedding with only family and VERY close friends...
We honeymooned on a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise... it was a great time but it was the longest I had ever been away from Kayden, so I was ready to come home...
We bought a house in June 2013... it was a very stressful, yet exciting endeavor...
(HA! But seriously, I can't find a pic of our actual house right now, so the doll house is what ya get...)
In August, I finally got hired on at an ENT practice I had been secretly stalking for several years... It's close to home and my fellow employees are great!
Fall 2013 was blissfully uneventful... except for Kayden being introduced to roller skating, with which she is now obsessed... Oh, and she started taking Tae Kwon Do...
We had a great Christmas... New Year's Eve was spent apart for the 2nd year in a row due to Mike's job.... Kayden & I had our own mini celebration at the house...
We celebrated our 1st anniversary with a weekend in St. Louis...
We learned we were expecting "The Bean" the week before our anniversary... we waited to share the news until we had a confirmed heartbeat... I'm older so the risks are higher... Kayden is super excited to be a big sister...
The late winter/early spring of 2014 has been fairly quiet... Kayden got her first pair of new skates and is so excited she could burst...
And that brings us up to today... Happy, Mom? ;-)

Zoo Party
I just ordered the cake for Kayden's birthday party this weekend... she is super excited about her party at the Zoo... according to one of her teachers, when she talks about it, her face lights up and she talks all fast and excited... :-)
I did a big party for her first and a small family party for her second... this year we're doing another big one... I don't think I could handle a big one every year...
We got portraits taken recently:

My little booger is growing up so fast....

New Love?
Shortly after I filed for divorce, I requested several friends on Facebook who I had previously removed or denied out of respect for my husband...
With the ones who accepted, I exchanged the typical pleasantries and complements on their children, etc and then they faded into the FB background, only to pop up sporadically with random updates and/or pictures.
One of those friends was Mike... It just so happened that he was in the middle of some legal issues, too, so we vented our legal frustrations to each other and renewed a friendship that had been dormant since we were 14 years old...
As time passed, it was clear that our feelings for each other were starting to deepen past the friendship point. My divorce was not yet final so I made it very clear to him that if at any point before the judge signed the papers my husband had a change of heart and chose to do the things necessary to repair our broken marriage, our friendship would have to end as my priority was to my family first. He was very understanding and incredibly supportive... he chose to stick it out, knowing that the possibility of never speaking to me again was there...
The divorce did go through and he was there to comfort me and help me heal in any way I needed... we talked for hours about our past relationships and things we liked and didn't like... we discussed our mistakes and short-comings and talked about how we would do things differently if we were put in the same position again... we talked about our plans and dreams for the future and about our goals and things we'd like to see happen for our children (he has a daughter as well)...
And it just keeps getting better... He has become my best friend... there are no secrets or hidden feelings... we never argue, but discuss our differences of opinion with open-minded respect... we can agree to disagree and still respect each other when we don't see eye to eye... We are a real team when it comes to anything, from making dinner, to cleaning up after... He'll play with Kayden or read her a book so I can chat with a friend and she just adores him... I think his daughter, Kelsey, is great, and he happily steps back and lets me help with the teenage girly things with her...

It's funny how life plays out sometimes... I never, in a million years, thought I'd be dating my 8th grade boyfriend again... but I am excited and optimistic about what the future has in store for us...

Goals & Healing
I am an on/off smoker... I smoked through part of college and grad school and quit about a year after I got married... I would bum the occational one while out with friends but quit doing that about 3 months before we started trying for Kayden...
I started again last June when my husband and I separated... when he moved back in, I quit again... and started up again in December when I filed for divorce...
This is a year of healing for me... Part of that healing involves completing a goal of mine from several years ago... which happened to require me to quit smoking at the beginning of April when I started training...
I am currently training for a half marathon that is taking place on October 20... I know I can do it as I've walked further than that before... but I really want to get back into running and I figure the only way to keep myself motivated is to aim high.
I am training on a walk 1/run 2-3 minute schedule as of now... some days are better than others but I know I'm improving... and while I'd like to run the whole distance, I am realistic and know it may be a walk/run interval kind of day...
I'm totally going to ROCK that 13.1 sticker on the back of my car, though ;-)

Where Have I Been?
It's been several months since my last post... and looking over my history the past couple years, it seems I take a break during the fall/winter months...
Sorry, a lot is going on in our little family...
I filed for divorce... Someday I'll tell the whole story, but for now, it's just not worth the drama... My heart is broken yet the overwhelming feeling of relief is refreshing after the last year of stress and worry and anxiety... I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my chest...
We are both currently staying in the house, but with his work and activity schedule, he's only there when he sleeps or is spending time with Kayden so we avoid each other most of the time.
Despite being sad that my marriage is over, I am very much at peace with my decision and am looking forward to what the future holds. I know God has a plan for me and I am excited to learn what that plan is.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

The Job Part 2
So since around Thanksgiving 2010, I have been working for an ENT office...
It's busy and the hearing aid part of it is a bit challenging since I've been out of the business for several years, but I'm enjoying it...
I see patients of all ages and the days go by pretty fast. The only thing I don't like is the days when I am not in clinic with the doctors, I am pretty bored... my hearing aid clientele has not built up enough yet to keep me busy on those days... and with all the snow lately, we've had some pretty slow clinic days....
But winter will be over soon and folks will have Christmas paid off and will be more likely to purchase aids again.... and I have a feeling all the 6-month aid checks are going to roll in once the weather gets a bit warmer...
I'm looking forward to warmer days.... I miss the sunshine....

The Job
In November 2010, I was offered a job that was drastically different than the one I had been doing at the hospital.... But before I get into that, here's a little back story:
You see, when I first was hired to run the newborn hearing screen program for the health system in the late summer of 2005, it was my dream job. I had a big, quiet office, I could come and go as I pleased, and the only person I really reported to was the state health office. I had every intention of staying in the position until I retired.
Then the department underwent some shuffling in the summer of 2007 and we were absorbed by another department in another building. I lost my big, private office and was forced to share much smaller spaces at 2 different locations. I had a more involved supervisor (which wasn't a bad thing, just different) and I was moving around a lot more than I would have liked. Still, I liked the job and the people I worked with so I never had any intention of ever leaving...
When the hospital contracted out the entire hearing screen program in the spring of 2008 and I essentially lost my job... however, the company they contracted to hired me to continue doing pretty much the same thing I had been doing... but when they hired me, they literally said, "you are no longer an audiologist... you are a hearing screen coordinator.... you need a high school diploma for your job... you may not do anything outside that scope of practice..."
My internal responses:
1) I will always be an audiologist... you can't tell me that unless you want to pay off my $100k in student loans and even then you can't take away my education...
2) I will remain licenced and will keep up my certification so I can do whatever the hell I want in the audiology scope of practice...
3) Crap, I need this job and can't afford to tell them like it is...
4) At least my supervisors are many states away and I don't have to put up with them breathing down my neck and trying to tell me how to do a job I had already been doing well for 3 years...
My external response:
Yes, I understand, thank you.... (and so began the corporate grind)
Then, after 2 1/2 years of their BS, I was offered a position with an ear, nose, & throat practice (ENT). No more babies, but no more corporate politics, no more early morning and weekend texts or phone calls, and no more administrative headaches... I could go to work, do my job, then go home without worrying about weekend troubleshooting, CPR/TB expirations, and holiday coverage... I'll take it!
More to come, so stay tuned.... ;-)

Updates...
So it's only been 2 months... life and work are unbelievably busy... but as Kayden grows, I'll be able to do more on here, I promise...
As for now, Kayden is 10 1/2 months old. She weighs about 23 lbs and is crawling all over the place... she started "cruising" on the furniture this week and, out of the blue, last weekend, started waving bye-bye...
She verbally says "da-da" & "ma-ma" and signs "milk" but seems to use the sign for all food and drink... she sometimes claps for "more".
She's growing so fast... plans are in the works for her 1st birthday party....
Bailey is doing well... despite lots of attention, she always seems to be under foot or in our faces... she steals food out of Kayden's hand when she's in the highchair but Kayden seems to think it's the funniest thing ever when she does... They are good friends and Bailey is very tolerant of the little pats and tugs Kayden dishes out...
We are one big happy, yet busy, family!
Looking forward to cooler weather so we can all visit the dog park again...

Unsolicited Advice
As I go along on this crazy parenthood ride, I've decided to share with you things that work for me... somethings I will have learned during my many years as a nanny and others I will learn as I go along...
In regards to kiddos of all ages, but especially those in the peak tantrum toddler years, I have found the more control you give them over their everyday lives, the more likely they are to do what you want when you want them to.
Examples:
Do you want the blue or the green plate?
Do you want Sofie the Giraffe or your stuffed octopus to play with in the car?
Do you want to brush your teeth or take a bath first? (Noticed I said FIRST.)
I have done this with MANY toddlers as a nanny over the years and am doing it with Kayden already. I actually started when she was very young with her diapers... the one she looked at was the one I assumed was her choice. Now that she's older, she'll grab the one she wants.
We will still have tantrums from time to time but the frequency and intensity will be greatly diminished. She will more easily accept the phrase "it's not a choice" (like holding my hand in the parking lot) and she'll learn that her choices have consequences (if she chooses the blue plate, someone else may get the green plate) very early on.
********************
Her first word is officially "milk." She signs it with gusto when she sees her sitters with the bottle... it's not consistent enough with me yet, but that may be because I sign "mama's milk" before I feed her so I add an extra step.

Busy Busy Busy
Again, I promised I haven't died. Life has just been very busy.
Tomorrow, my chunky monkey will be 8 months old. In a nutshell, here is what's been going on:
Right at 7 months Kayden learned to clap and was sitting up pretty stably. She also got her first 2 teeth within a week of each other. She was pretty tough though.... she just started acting fussy about 12 hours before the first one broke through and the only sign of discomfort with the other was a few nights with added feedings.

The last week of April we started Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), a class which teaches self water rescue to infants and young children.

In early May, Kayden went to her first circus. It was an old fashion kind with a big top tent and everything.

The first couple weeks of May, Kayden has really honed her movement. Although she is still not crawling, she scoots very well and has just started to figure out that the scooting can get her from one place to the other. Her sitter said she pulled herself up on a basket but was back down on her bottom before she could grab her camera and she never did it again.
I am considering taking on a volunteer position which may lead to a new career path. Since having Kayden, I have discovered a passion for a field I never would have thought of. It's a long road but I am starting on the reading requirements in the few spare minutes I have.
We've been dealing with cable TV issues for 3 weeks now and it's still not right. I don't know who is more frustrated: Me or my husband...
We lost power during a big storm a few nights ago and had to break out a generator to save the fish tank... we were blessed with deep freeze space at Kayden's sitter's house so we didn't lose any food thank God...
I have started to rebuild my stash of frozen milk. I am pretty sure I've worked out all the kinks and should be successful this time around.
Kayden kissed a boy for the first time last week.... My poor husband isn't gonna know what hit him....

Kayden is growing fast. She weighs 20 lbs and wears 12 and 18 month bottoms, partially because of her personal fluff and partly because of the added fluff of the cloth diapers. I am pretty sure she will slim down substantially once she starts moving around more.
I will go into further details on some of the above events in upcoming posts... hopefully the pics will tide you over til I can post again.

Brand Power
Just when I find a product I like, it goes away.... And yes, I am gonna name names....
The first time I cam across this was with Lipton Mint Tea. LOVE IT!!! It used to be sold by the box. Then I could only find it in the multi flavored box which included 6 flavors, 2 of which I did not like at all. So I e-mailed the company. They apologized and informed me it was only available in the multi pack. So I switched brands, although I haven't found a brand or flavor I like as well.
Next, it was with the Adiri bottles. Fabulous things for breast fed babies... $12 a piece, though. I bought the set that offered all three flow rates (0-3, 3-6, and 6+ months) thinking we would start with the first and work our way up until we figured out the flow Kayden preferred then buy a few more of that one. Well, they quit making them altogether... I found this out when I was frantically searching for a replacement for the one slow flow we had because the nipple cracked and the 3-6 month flow was too fast for her. I looked at the 3 places locally that carried them and they were out... so I went online and bought 6... the good news was because they had been discontinued, they were all half price...
Most recently, it was with deodorant. A long while back, I was using Degree soft solid... you know, the one that squeezes creamy lotiony stuff out of the top when you turn the bottom. Then I couldn't find it anymore... Secret and Suave both offered it, so I switched to Suave because it was cheaper and worked just as well. Now, I can't find a soft solid to save my live.... NO ONE seems to offer it anymore... so I have to either use a clear solid that doesn't keep me dry at all or a regular solid that leaves white gunk in my under-pits and all over my clothes.
I am afraid of what might be next...

Kayden was 18lbs 14oz (90-95 %tile) and 25 1/2 inches (45 %tile) at her 6 month check-up. She is pretty much sitting up on her own but still topples over frequently. She has mastered the art of rolling front to back only because she hates tummy time so much she figured a way out of it. She has been introduced to the sippy cup and although she still views it as a toy, she has taken sips from it successfully. She ate cereal at the sitters today for the first time and seemed to enjoy it. She had everything we had on Easter Sunday: ham, green bean casserole, and some mango via her mesh feeder and mashed potatoes, yams, and corn casserole from the spoon, which she loved helping with. She takes 1-3 naps a day ranging from 15 minutes to 3 1/2 hours and is sleeping in her own room in her own crib for 8-10 hours at night.
My baby is growing up so fast....

Dog Park Adventure
As I mentioned in the previous post, we took our first trip to the dog park... but our adventure did not end at finally fitting into the car.. oh no...
When we got to the park, Bailey was so excited she could barely contain herself... the last time we were there was July or August of last year... Then I went on modified bed rest, had a baby, and had to recover... by the time I was well enough to go, it was too cold for Kayden to go and my husband's schedule did not allow him to either take Bailey or watch Kayden while I went.
Once I got Kayden in the stroller and covered with a blanket, I got Bailey on the leash and we headed to the gate. Now, as a safety measure, you have to go through 2 gates... it keeps dogs from escaping if they try to slip out when someone else is entering or exiting. A great idea for the dogs... not so much for a jogging stroller... but after a bit of maneuvering, we made it in.
Unfortunately, the way the park is set up, it is almost always a wind tunnel. Even on the warmest days with no wind, there is a cool breeze... which is GREAT for the dogs, not so much for mom and a baby... I forgot about this little quirk and although it was a warm day, it was probably 5-10 degrees cooler at the park... a bit too cool for Kayden. Needless to say, we only stayed about 15 minutes.
Although it was a bit cool, Kayden had a blast! She loved watching the dogs play and thought it was the funniest thing in the world when they came to smell her... The owners seemed mortified that their dogs were smelling her, though... I mean, really... I wouldn't have brought Kayden in a stroller if I was worried about that...
When we left, we had an even harder time getting back into the car. I had to put Bailey in first so she wouldn't escape or pull on her leash while I was getting Kayden in the car. Once I got them both in, I had to get the stroller in... but Bailey had taken back over her spot in the backseat... It was a mess trying to get her in the front seat long enough for me to toss the stroller in the backseat...
So went our first trip to the dog park... I have decided that I will probably just wear Kayden in the Moby Wrap next time we go... it will be easier than wrestling with the stroller, which I don't think is technically allowed anyway...

6 months old today!!! Although she is still not rolling over, she is almost sitting up and, although she HATES tummy time, I have a feeling crawling is not far behind...
And 19lbs... holy crap she's big!!!!

First Word
I woke up to Kayden talking this morning... not unusual...
Then, she said "da da" clear as day... VERY unusual....
Already a daddy's girl.... I guess I'm just the cow...

Spoiled
Kayden hates the bottle. She only takes it toward the end of the day and it's usually a fight for the baby sitter to get her to take it... She knows what to do, she just chooses not to. She just doesn't like artificial anything in her mouth: bottle, binky, teething ring, etc... she will, however suck on her fingers, my fingers, my hand, my arm, my shoulder, etc. for comfort...
We noticed early on that she preferred fresh milk from the bottle (when she would take it) instead of frozen from the bottle. It didn't smell any different to me, although the sitter said the frozen smelled soapy to her compared to the fresh... We just thought she was being picky. Then the other day I had a bag of frozen that was partially thawed at the baby sitter's. I decided to let it finish thawing in my frig and use it on my cereal the next day to see if it really tasted different or if she was just being picky. I took one bite of the cereal and had to spit it out... it tasted spoiled... No wonder she refused the bottle of frozen...
I spoke with a few different lactation consultants to see what I was doing wrong. Apparently there is an enzyme in some women's milk that causes the milk to taste spoiled once its been frozen... it's not really spoiled, it just tastes that way...
Great, now what am I supposed to do with the freezer full of frozen milk in 1 to 3 ounce portions?
There is a cooking method that can reverse the effect and can sometimes make the milk taste ok again... it involves simmering the milk for 10 minutes... one method says to do it after it's thawed and another said to do it before it's frozen... so which is it?
Part of me is heartbroken that I spent all that time and energy bagging, labeling, and freezing all that milk just to have to throw it all out... but the other part of me doesn't want to spend even more time and energy on a theory that may or may not work... especially since I am keeping up with her demand with fresh milk...
So for now, I am pumping and storing in the frig... it is good for up to 8 days and I am currently about 3-5 days ahead of what she is currently being fed. If it gets to the point where I am pumping for her next days supply, we may have to introduce a bit of formula... but for the sake of my laundry, my wallet and my finicky daughter, I hope it never comes to that...
********************
We had her 4 month check on 1/20... she was 16 pounds 1 ounce and 24 inches long... 50th percentile for height... 95th percentile for weight!!!!
Enjoy it now, kiddo... it's the only time being that much bigger than your peers is considered healthy.

Funny Man
Many things my husband did and said throughout the whole pregnancy made me laugh...
When I told him I was expecting he jokingly asked if it was his... then asked what child support ran these days...
The look of shock when I told him I expected him to be there when I delivered and he wanted to know who was gonna hold his hand...
When he asked how she knew what to do the first time I nursed her....
Just the other day he told me he hoped she grew up to be ugly... that his life would me so much easier if she wasn't good looking...
But the best was after I had her... the whole time I was pregnant, he jokingly kept saying the baby wasn't his... when everyone came back in after our first hour alone as a family, they asked him what he thought of her...
"It's official... no way she's mine... I couldn't make something that pretty..."
Later that evening, they were watching football together and he talked to her about the game like she was one of his friends....
During a commercial: "She's just perfect... now what do we have to do about her head?" (I explained it would round out on its own.)
And now anytime there is anything out of the ordinary going on with her, he looks at me with the most pathetic look and says, "What's wrong with her? What do we do to fix it? You'd better take her to the doctor!" So funny for a tough guy like him to be so spastic :-)
